Gary Snyder Project Space is pleased to present an exhibition of seven works of art by Hisao Hanafusa created between 1963 to 1970. Rooted in a minimalist tradition, and partaking of an aesthetic celebrated in the 1966 "Systemic Painting" show at the Solomon R. Guggenheim museum, the works exhibited remind us of Donald Judd's statement, in 1965, that "half or more of the best new work in recent years has been neither painting nor sculpture." Carter Ratcliff, in the essay that accompanies the 32-page exhibition catalogue, writes:

"[Hanafusa] developed a series of works that solidify [his] place in the New York art world of the period. Made during 1967-70, they elaborate the possibilities of horizontal line- or, to be more specific, horizontal patterns of tubing. In Yellow I, the silverish tubes are separated by strips of canvas that are themselves tubular- or, at any rate, are curved in a way that suggests the presence of tubes beneath the canvas. So the central zone of this work is occupied by not only an alternation of silver and yellow. There is an alternation, as well, of visible and invisible, and we are drawn into speculations about the underlying structure of the object."

Victoria Meyers architect, hanrahan Meyers architects (hMa) partner, designs custom furnishings to fit clients' needs. Many projects result in spaces where off-the-shelf furniture doesn't fit. For White Space / Ash 4Ways, for example, this included most of the apartment furniture.

For the living room hMa designed a coffee table that opens to become a bed. For the dining area, hMa worked with hMa collaborator Miya Shoji to design a custom dining room table that fit within the confines of a limited dining space. For the Bedroom, hMa designed a bed that incorporates storage and also elegantly controls the flow into and out of the room. The solution faces the bed toward the apartment's Central Park view. Closets lining the bedroom open to reveal an enclosed work desk. Tight New York spaces work when furnishings are customized to fit the space.

WaterFall Table was designed as a simple slab of (sustainably harvested) ash, supported on two planar leg supports, so that you read the horizontal line of the table-top as a strong line, floating in space. At the two edges, steel beads make a translucent WaterFall. The table was designed to transport interior spaces into Nature.

The Music Box, commissioned by New York Composer Michael Schumacher, was designed as a container for an ambient sound art installation. Schumacher's ambient sound pieces use everyday sounds to make compositions. Schumacher requested an object that would perform as the sound-art equivalent of Duchamp's urinal. To create a box that took the everyday, and force it into a new geometry, hMa designed an anamorphic cube. An Anamorph is a figure that appears randomly distorted, that pops into its normal shape when viewed from the correct angle. The Music Box is a distorted cube.

White Space / Ash 4 Ways

hanrahan Meyers architects (hMa) are pleased to announce that their project 'White Space apartment' is featured in a new book published by Loft Publications. The 204-page book feature 30 different projects of contemporary residential designs. The book is written by Ethel Baraona and Lilliana Bollini.

White Space (Ash 4 Ways) is a Manhattan apartment where ash is used in four different states of finish within a minimalist white envelope.

The original space was an apartment that was chopped into many spaces. hMa emptied the space to create a maximum infiltration of light and views of Central Park. The intention was to create a space that replicates the complex beauty of Nature in Central Park. The views extend one’s experience of the natural materials within the apartment into the Park beyond.

The goal was to create space that flows and accommodates the needs for living with a great sense of comfort. Although the space is completely ‘white’, the various textures, tones and materials create and overall sense of warmth. The free-form pieces of ash bring a sense of ‘Nature’ from the Park into the space.

Ash 4 Ways is a Manhattan apartment where ash is used in four different states of finish within a minimalist white envelope. The apartment finishes are primarily ash, with different finishes: white finished, sandblasted ash (wall panels); sand-blasted, acid washed and wire-brush scrubbed ash with high gloss white finish (bedroom furniture); natural finish ash door panels; and natural hand-rubbed, wax finished 5” thick wood from ancient ash trees.

Most of the ash has a white, shop-applied finish, to make the apartment envelope relatively silent. Throughout the project, pieces of old, ash planks with a hand-rubbed finish float within the neutral, white envelope. The white envelope is differentiated on inspection, however, by the varying degrees of wood grain. The painted ash is acid dipped and wire brushed, or sand-blasted, so that the wood grain appears more or less prominently. Painted panels are juxtaposed to natural-finished ash door panels and free-form ash planks from ancient ash trees harvested locally in upper New York State.

The principal materials for the two bathrooms are: natural finished solid ash doors: white-painted sand-blasted ash wall panels; translucent, hand-made glass tiles by MBC studios, a family owned glass atelier in upstate New York, as well as translucent glass panels. One bath makes the eastern edge of the living room, with translucent glass. This bath has a shower. The other bath has a privacy window (painted sand-blasted ash), which can be opened to the adjacent master bedroom.

The desired overall effect was to create a space of calm where the large pieces of free-form ash from ancient trees could float. This wood is in reference to the Nature in Central Park, which the apartment overlooks.
