2008 Dallas AIA Design Awards

Next month, on September 17th and 18th, Victoria Meyers will participate as Juror Chair for 2008 Design Awards Program at The Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Joining Victoria as part of the Unbuilt Project Jury is Edward Keegan, AIA, Associate Editor of Architect Magazine, and Andres Lepik, curator of contemporary architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Pritzker Prize winner Thom Mayne, FAIA, of Morphosis Architects, Rick Clarke, AIA, of Zimmer Gunsul Frasca and James McGrath of Foster + Partners will make up the Built Project Jury.

hMa is pleased to be featured in the July 11, 2008 issue of Hampton Style Magazine. hMa is recognized along with other established architects and designers who work in and around the Hamptons in the the article The Who's Who of Making of Making Your House a Home.

The following is excerpted from the article :

"July 19 marks the opening of the much-anticipated Hamptons Showhouse in Sagaponack, and accordingly we present a list of the men and women who toil in the fields of interior design and architecture. Some of them span both fields, and all of them excel at their craft. Working in concert, they create the homes that draw us out to the Hamptons every summer. Borrowing the brainpower of many of them, we have also compiled a Hamptons-based resource guide for compelling decorative elements and furniture." Dune House

hanrahanMeyers architects (hMa) are included in the Hamptons guide to architects and interior designers in recognition of the firm’s national reputation for award-winning design. hMa are one of the internationally known firms included in the ‘Houses at Sagaponac’ group of architects. hMa is in the process of designing the Dune House, a new residence in Amagansett, including state-of-the-art green features: geo-thermal heating and cooling, solar panels, and renewable, sustainably harvested materials. The firm’s researches into light can be viewed in Victoria Meyers’s 2006 book, ‘designing with light’. The firm’s reputation for design includes internationally known projects including the Holley House in Garrison, New York, featured in a monograph published by Architectura Viva.

hMa’s Holley House was featured in AV Monographs (No.127) for 2007 (published summer 2008) as part of the publication’s focus on The Natural House

“The 650 square meter house in the town of Garrison, New York is planned around the contrasting spatial experiences of landscape walls and horizontal decks and roofs. Two parallel walls extend in the direction of the access path and separate the two living pavilions, made of horizontal decks that cascade up and down following the slope of the site. These walls seem to emerge directly from the ground to create a sequence of interior spaces, bathed by the light proceeding from precise openings that also frame the views of the landscape.”

“When crossing the house from east to west the itinerary begins at the master bedroom, descends through a flight of stairs until reaching a space delimited by two solid walls that accommodate the guest bedrooms, and extends the views towards a small pond. From the north down, the itinerary would begin at the road, continue through the guest bedroom wing and end at the swimming pool that is detached to the south. The point of intersection of these two itineraries marks the position of the main entrance. The house is constructed from steel and wood framing, thinly cut limestone blocks, cedar siding and maple flooring and millwork.”

In 2004 hMa’s Red Hook Center for the Arts opened to the public. The building is located in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn.

In the design of public buildings it is often the small details that make the building. Red Hook CFA is a building with a series of surfaces brushed with light. Featured below are a series of vignettes from the building’s entry sequence, demonstrating the building’s unique relationship to natural light.

hMa is pleased to share these newly developed renderings of the Battery Park City Community Center.

About the Battery Park City Community Center project:

The primary architectural feature of the new platinum LEED-rated Battery Park City Community Center is a 500-foot long glass ‘Wall of Light’ situated at the base of two new residential towers in Battery Park City’s North Neighborhood immediately north of Ground Zero. The wall will feature an installation of LED lights designed by hanrahanMeyers architects with Tillotson Design Associates, illuminating a sound composition by New York composer Michael Schumacher. The wall is a public promenade and demonstration of the passive energy systems fueling the new Community Center. Facing inside the center, the wall unifies a diverse program of swimming pools, a gymnasium, theater, classrooms, and recreation and dance spaces, while bringing natural light into all of the primary spaces. It is scheduled to be completed by 2010.

hanrahan Meyers architects believe that abstract and minimal form is part of an ongoing transformation of design as a global practice of universal forms, as well as a local practice that values essential human experience by accomplishing the most with the least means.

Recently, photographer Jordi Miralles traveled from Spain to photograph hMa's White Space / Ash 4 Ways apartment located in Manhattan, NYC designed by hanrahan Meyers architects (hMa). His images will be featured in an upcoming book: 150 New York Loft Ideas published by Loft Publications.

White Space / Ash 4Ways is an award-winning minimalist loft apartment in Manhattan overlooking Central Park. Bob Gelber is hosting a tour of Battery Park City's North Neighborhood where, since 1997 hanrahan Meyers architects (hMa), have been master plan architects. As Battery Park's Master Plan Architects hMa were responsible for achieving several milestones in the development of one of the most forward-thinking urban master plan in America. Battery Park City’s ‘Green Guidelines’ set the standard for green guidelines for all other city agencies in the City of New York, and for communities throughout the United States.

Teardrop Park, a major green feature and landscape design in BPC's North Neighborhood, is a project that hMa participated in from its beginning stages. The design team for the Park included hMa; artist Ann Hamilton; and Michael Van Valkenburgh, Landscape Architect. As Design Team members, hMa celebrates how Teardrop Park, a highlight of Mr. Gelber's tour, brings elements of the landscape of upstate New York and the original landscape of Manhattan, to Battery Park's North Neighborhood. The infusion of Nature into a high-rise residential neighborhood celebrates and embraces the values that h Ma places on bringing elements of Nature into their architectural and master plan designs. Join Bob Gelber, founder of Walkin’ NY, for a tour of the North Neighborhood and take in lower Manhattan’s open spaces, waterfronts and environmentally friendly commercial, residential and retail buildings.
